The Mountain Pygmy Possum, Burramys parvus, is Australia's only hibernating marsupial. It lives in Victoria's highlands and spends 6 months of the year hibernating and the rest frolicking in the high plains.
On the Brink of Extinction
Current estimates of its population are less than 2000. Zoos Victoria manages a captive breeding program at Healesville Sanctuary and releases mountain pygmy possums into alpine areas every year.
