Greater Glider

Petauroides volans by Department of National Parks (Qld)

The Greater Glider, Petauroides volans, is Australia's largest gliding marsupial. The glider lives along Australia's East coast in eucalypt forests and is listed as vulnerable under the EPBC Act. Unlike other industries that are forced to protect species listed under the Act, Federal RFAs (Regional Forest Agreements) exempt logging from complying. This means that logging in Victoria and other states continues in areas that are known habitat for threatened species like the Greater Glider.

"Greater gliders are in nationwide decline. They've gone regionally extinct at Jervis Bay on the south coast of NSW, and over the past 20 years, their population has crashed by two-thirds in the mountain ash forests of Central Victoria," said Prof David Lindenmayer from the Fenner School at the ANU (April 2018).
