About Toolangi

Toolangi means Tall trees in Taungurung, the language of the local indigenous people. The area is home to the mighty Mountain Ash, Eucalyptus Regnans, the tallest flowering tree in the world. It's also home to a myriad of threatened endemic species including the Leadbeater's Possum and Powerful Owl. These species are dependent on hollows that form when these trees approach 100 years of age. Clearfell logging as practised in Toolangi has a big impact on the area's biodiversity. The field of Soundscape Ecology allows ecologists to record and compare the biodiversity of an area before and after any such human impact.
