Healesville Sanctuary

Healesville Sanctuary

Set among the misty eucalypts and overlooking Badger Creek, Healesville Sanctuary lets visitors engage with iconic Australian wildlife.

Open: 9-5pm every day of the year

Fighting Extinction
As part of its commitment to fighting extinction, the Sanctuary runs breeding programs for the critically endangered Leadbeater's Possum and Tasmanian Devil. Daily presentations include the Spirits of the Sky bird show, Tales from Platypus Creek, and talks about kangaroos, koalas, devils, dingoes and wombats. The Sanctuary also runs breeding programs for 12 other threatened species including the Mountain Pygmy Possum, Southern Corroboree Frog, Helmeted Honeyeater, Orange Bellied Parrot and Bush-Stone Curlew.

Indigenous Culture - the Link to Coranderrk
The Sanctuary manages Coranderrk, an important historical site and former settlement of Wurrundjeri tribesmen. Indigenous exhibits also feature traditional canoes and huts, and an audio recording tells the story of William Barak, an early indigenous rights campaigner and leader.
